The club would then be run by those members, and decisions such as team selections, transfers, tactics.. you name it, would be made by the members through a voting system.<br /><br />To be honest, I was intrigued by the idea of being involved in a Championship Manager style Footy management game, but in real life. Also, the collective intelligence factor has never been introduced into the equation in football... surely the collective opinions of passionate fans at football clubs could be very useful indeed, nobody knows more about their own club, players, etc. How often has an entire crowd cried for a substitution when a player isn't performing, and how often are they right?<br /><br />Well, I am now joint Owner of Ebbsfleet United Football Club thanks to the MyFootballClub initiative on the web. Ebbsfleet was basically chosen because the money raised would never have been enough for a much bigger club, and apparently the club met the conditions required for the takeover.<br /><br />What I've now realised however, is that I couldn't really care less about the entire initiative. To be quite honest, the only way that I would spend time reading the forums, making decisions, getting to know the players so that I can help pick the team, watch the games, etc. would be if I had supported the team my entire life. Ebbsfleet united does not mean anything to me and I'm therefore not likely to spend time getting involved.<br /><br />All this does not mean to say that the MyFootballClub initiative or concept is doomed. I think the main problem is motivational. Members really need to feel for the club, to support the club. If the club in question was Spurs or Racing (the two clubs I support) I have no doubt that I would have my say and feel passionately about it. In the Ebbsfleet United situation, it's Ebbsfleet fans who should be involved, and they are the ones who will make the best decisions.<br /><br />I honestly think that the use of collective intelligence in football is an interesting idea and that it could well work in some aspects. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted. </em></div><div align="justify"><em></div></em><div align="justify"><em>Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm! Likewise, replace a third original monkey with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth. </em></div><div align="justify"><em></div></em><div align="justify"><em>Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked. Most of the monkeys that are beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey. After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana. Why not? Because as far as they know that's the way it's always been done around here."</em> </div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">This is often used as an analogy to explain how company policies and processes can become inefficient and pointless. I also think that it's an analogy of human behaviour in terms of how certain attitudes and beliefs can persist despite the fact that the conditions that caused them in the first place have ceased to exist. I have to say Steve has more than made up for the mediocre "<a href="http://www.waroftheworlds.com">war of the worlds</a>" and the disappointing "<a href="http://www.theterminal-themovie.com/">the terminal</a>". Having seen the film in its original version in Spain, it is amusing to see Israeli terrorists fool Palestinians into thinking they are in fact ETA terrorists - an unlikely scenario seeing as those involved look about as basque as I look Outer Mongolian, as well as having quite marked Jewish complexions (at least 3 of them).<br /><a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3727/1898/1600/macgyver.0.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3727/1898/320/macgyver.0.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br />In any case - this made me recall a certain MacGyver episode in which our hero fights against a bunch of basque terrorists. Their portrayal is quite hilarious as the props make it look more like Colombia than Europe (straw huts, bananas and the lot), and some of the basques look more like Australian Aborigines rather than anything that could vaguely resemble an Euskaldun. As a result, the area where the navy began searching was a circle 20 miles wide and many 1000s of feet deep. You could not imagine a more hopeless task… A naval officer, John Craven concocted a series of scenarios… Then he assembled a team of men with a wide range of knowledge including mathematicians, submarine specialists, salvage men, etc. Instead of asking them to consult w/each other to come up with an answer, he asked each of them to offer his best guess about how likely each scenario was… He took all the guesses, and used a formula called Baye’s theorem to estimate the Scorpion’s final location. The location that Craven came up with was not a spot that any individual member of the group had picked… The final estimate was a genuinely collective judgement that the group as a whole had made, as opposed to representing the individual judgement of the smartest people in it… 5 months after the Scorpion disappeared, a navy ship found it.
